Ellie Lim, a media professional in Singapore, had planned to buy a new Volvo SUV to ferry her newborn baby. Until she realized it was going to cost her more than S$200,000 ($142,000).
Lim says a combination of high interest on car loans, fuel prices and maintenance fees put car ownership out of reach. It’s a common lament in Singapore, where an authorities use an expensive permit system to restrict the number of cars on the roads.
Singapore is able to have such an expensive car-ownership system partly because it’s a small island. But increasingly, urban planners are saying that the real solution to the pollution and waste from automobiles is simply to have fewer of them – and that could affect us all.
