Why do Chinese tourists in Thailand have such a bad reputation?(爲什麽中國遊客在泰國名聲這麽臭?)
I went to Bangkok 2 years ago and the hostel I booked has no elevator. My room was at the 3rd floor so I left my luggage inside the small storage room they had on the ground floor.
On my last day, I returned to the hostel at around 1 AM from the night market.
The rest of the lights were turned off with only one fluorescent lamp illuminating the reception area. It was dim and quite. No one was there.
Shit. I don't have the key to the storage room. I have to be at the airport in 4 hours.
I always see the receptionist sleep on the sofa the previous nights. Perhaps she just went to the washroom.
I sat and waited.
30 minutes have passed. No receptionist turned up. I was starting to get anxious.
I checked the reception desk and opened the drawers but I haven't found any key.
I was sweating furiously so I decided to go upstairs to take a quick shower (I had extra clothes in my backpack).
Afterwards, I sat on the bed feeling defeated and searched "how to open a doorknob using a hairpin" on YouTube when I suddenly heard murmurs at the stairs.
It could be the staff!
I quickly put my clothes on and ran downstairs.
But there was no staff.
The voices came from two Chinese guys trying to book a cab that would take them to the airport.
"Hello! Do you happen to know where the staff is? My luggage is inside the storage room and I don't have the key. I have an early flight…", I started babbling.
I received a blank stare.
"We don't speak English well", said the guy then he said something to his companion.
The other guy held his phone in front of my mouth. I was confused. I looked at the screen and realized that they have a translator app.
I began to repeat what I have just said. He clicked a button. A woman's voice from the app translated it in Chinese. We communicated like that all throughout.
They have a local sim card and they also have the owner's personal number!
They offered to call the owner. I spoke with him and he told me that the receptionist slept at the spare room in the 4th floor and he can call her.
A few minutes later, I had my luggage back.
"Xie xie! xie xie! xie xie!", I kept telling the Chinese guys. Aside from it's the only Chinese word I know apart from ni hao and wo ai ni, I really could not thank them enough for what they did for me.
They were heading to Phuket and were in a hurry because they woke up late. But they still chose to help me.
When I was in Hong Kong, I met two girls from Mainland China. They were very nice despite of the circumstances we were in at the time (another story).
I was also with Chinese tourists in a tour bus in Chiang Rai a few months ago and I sit with them in airplanes from time to time.
Some of them could be extremely loud but aside from that, I haven't personally experienced or witnessed any despicable behaviour from Chinese tourists. And I hope it stays that way. 😀
