Singapore Chinese Orchestra Composer Workshop – 13 & 14 March 2020
INFORMATION SHEET FOR COMPOSER WORKSHOP 2020:
Organised by Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO), the Composer Workshop comprises of a talk, orchestra score reading session and a sharing discussion. This workshop is held in various venues at the Singapore Conference Hall.
Through the workshop, SCO aims to:
· Provide opportunities for aspiring composers to experience writing orchestral compositions
· Introduce a range of compositional approaches for Chinese instruments
Composer Workshop Day 1 – Talk on Film Scoring
Date: 13 March 2020, Friday
Time: 7:30 – 9pm
Venue: Exhibition Hall (level 1)
Renowned Hong Kong film score composer Lincoln Lo will be sharing about various aspects of film music and its importance in today’s movie industry. Since 1996, he has scored, composed, arranged and produced music for over 250 films, 30 television drama series and over 200 television commercials throughout his music career. He was named “The Youngest Platinum Music Producer” in Hongkong in 1997 and was invited by SCO to collaborate with SCO Maestro Tsung Yeh and composer for our Huayi 2014 production Ruan Lingyu’s The Goddess – A Silent Film Concert. Since then, he has become a frequent collaborator with SCO and Esplanade, performing together in 2016, 2017 and 2020 in Huayi – Chinese Festival of Arts. His most recent works with SCO is Unspoken Melodies: Silent Film Classics in Concert in February 2020.
On the topic of Film Scoring, he will discuss about the following aspects to gain insights about the role of film music:
· Film scoring procedures
· Audio post-production
· History of sound technology – from mono-stereo to Dolby Surround and Dolby Atoms.
The sharing session will be conducted in Mandarin.
Composer Workshop Day 2 – Score Reading Session
Date: 14 March 2020, Saturday
Time: 1 – 5pm (Score Reading Session)
Venue: SCO Concert Hall (Level 3)
Under the baton of SCO Music Director Tsung Yeh, SCO will read the works of 9 selected pieces submitted for the Composer Workshop.
The theme for this year is Movie Music Composition, where participants will compose music based on selected films from the “My Singapore Style” Micro Film Competition held in 2016. This competition is jointly organised by Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA), Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) and Chinese Daily Lianhe Zaobao.
The selected films are:
- Joss Sticks and Paper Shop
- Still
- Children Under the Roof
Composer Workshop Day 2 – Sharing Session
Date: 14 March 2020, Saturday
Time: 6.30 – 9.50pm
Venue: Exhibition Hall (Level 1)
SCO Music Director Tsung Yeh, Composer-in-Residence Law Wai Lun, SCO Principals and musicians will be providing feedback for workshop participants to improve and share about their respective compositions.
The sharing session will be conducted in Mandarin.
