We got a very curved, fragmented space when we were involved in the project. Initially, the architects designed the space in a straightforward way, using cellular as the form to create the showroom. We started with “emotion” and created five scenarios. Starting from the story, we create scenarios through experience (show, performance, installation, etc.) in the theater-like space. We motivate the audience’s emotions in a more intuitive and visual way, forming a top-level strategy with “emotion” as the core.

The design of Yada Theater, instead of adopting the “closed box” approach, interprets a unique experience blending art with nature for visitors from the perspective of “openness”. The central courtyard is the core of the theater, interspersed with a series of grey spaces. To interpret “local characteristics”, architects studied local building materials, and finally selected the grayish green ceramic panels produced in Yixing as exterior wall materials, creating a simple and elegant atmosphere. The 530-seat multifunctional auditorium can realize transition between open and picture-frame stages, meeting the needs of professional performances such as concerts and dramas and adapting to the scenes of other cultural events. A floor-to-ceiling glass curtain wall is used creatively in the stage background, which makes you feel as if you are sitting in a “Song-style couch” set in tea fields and water features. As the project adopts integrated design, the design team, apart from the architectural, interior and landscape design, reviewed the integration effect of the illumination and curtain wall design as well as the special design of the auditorium, stage, lighting and acoustics, which is a new and meaningful attempt.

SHIZUKU is a sake bar and retail project with approximately 800 sqft, inserted on the ground floor of a 6-storey residential building, which was built in 1972. It is located in the Rua Central, facing the cultural heritage of the Tribunal Velho (Old Court House), in Macau SAR. Shizukuzake (雫酒), meaning “drip sake”, is a method of separating sake from the lees without external pressure by hanging the mash in bags and allowing the liquid to drip out under its own weight by gravity. The Chinese word ‘雫’ can also be read as ‘雨下’, meaning ‘the dripping rain’. Therefore, the design conceptualised around the elements of rain. Everyone shares a shelter under the rain, overseeing the moon on the other side. The seemingly omni-morphing ceiling, which is inherited from one of the most historical Taishō Era (大正) pattern (石畳紋) of Japan, which was also embedded into the 2021 Tokyo Olympics logo. The fixture houses lighting fixtures, display shelves, smoke/heat detectors and access panels. Moreover, there is a hidden hanging system, behind the offsetted panels, which will be used for hosting weeks/months-long collaborations with parties including local animation, dancing, photography studios, jazz bands, etc. This will be one of the venues to host a ‘City as museum’ series, launching exhibitions and events at places of different categories over the same period of time. The pixelated arch frames the classified 20th century architecture and the vivid daily life of the pedestrians, tourists and neighbours, visualising a Japanese version of the metropolitan nature of the post-colonial city, on the other hand, respecting the memory and time of the historical building in the old neighbourhood. Various types of seating are implemented into the sake bar in order to offer ergonomical freedom for individual sentiments. Tall bar stool when one feels more shining; regular dining height for a cozier encounter; the lowest 700mm tea table to allow an even more relaxed experience. The angled approach of the bar counter minimises the difficulty of communications among drinkers and servers, and the turning point momentarily becomes the pivot of the venue.

HAS design and research希望MoMA不僅作爲大衆空間,並可替忙碌的城市居民提供休憩場所。
MoMA is the abbreviation for Museum of Modern Aluminum. The project originated from a group of ambitious clients with the goal of reviving the significance of aluminum in Thailand. HAS design and research wanted MoMA to serve not only as a public space but also as a getaway for busy urban dwellers. The building extends the natural landscape of Ko Kret Island to the project site. During the day, MoMA is a dandelion, with its overhanging elements swaying in the wind, bringing softness and lightness to the busy Ratchaphruek Road; at night, MoMA transforms into a firefly, adding a sense of nature and peacefulness to the highly commercialized Ratchaphruek Road.

New Government Quarter
Nordic Office of Architecture
Nordic Office of Architecture won the competition to redesign the Norwegian government headquarters. Statsbygg launched the design competition for new governmental buildings in 2016. The Regjeringskvartalet, and specifically a block housing the prime minister’s office, was the target of a car bomb attack on 22 July 2011 that caused significant damage to several buildings. The design comprises seven blocks building containing 4,500 workplaces, which will be surrounded by parks, squares, cafes and a visitor center to provide a place for its citizens to enjoy. The New Government Quarter will contribute to a better urban environment — it will be efficient, flexible and secure for the collection of ministries it will house in the years to come. It will be an area of representation for the government, yet open and available to all. Four words guide its development: noble, enduring, beautiful and friendly.

The site of the project was located in Hasht Behesht town near Mount Damavand. At first, the land had a slope to the north. Yet, view of the site posed a serious challenge; at the far end above the horizon, Damavand Peak (the highest peak in Iran) was the best view of the site. However, down the horizon line, there was a crowded street imposing disturbing views on the inside. The challenge was to keep the view to the mountain and at the same time, hide the inside from the street. Therefore, answering this challenge shaped the concept of the project; the slope was removed and the land turned into a pit. Making this decision, the internal spaces were concealed from pedestrians’ view, yet they still benefitted from the view to the Peak. Instead of having an integrated volume, the volume was cut into three separate volumes, lodging small yards in their cores to help them hide the view from the street, while providing the view to the Peak.

Currently one of the world’s largest exhibition and convention center, it has a building area of 1.6 million square meters, and an indoor exhibition area of 400,000 square meters. It showcases the deep meaning of the “Maritime Silk Road” figuratively with the lavender blue wavy roof and the winding colorful ribbon patterns. The passionate Shenzhen flower, bougainvillea, and “coast guard” mangroves are subtly integrated into the design, becoming a unique architectural language. Architects need to do the design according to local conditions, make good use of the natural environment, meet functional needs, and then make the building into a living work. No matter what kind of architectural form, we should pay attention to the details and move people with them.
