How to pose a model for outdoor photos
By: CSP
Photography has been one of my favourite past times for many years, since I was 15 to be exact. The ability to freeze aspecial moment at the click of a button still fascinates me. Today, capturing such moments has become a lot easier, whether you are using a camera or amobile phone, and sharing such moments with people you know through various social media has become a norm.
Photography is about composition, focusing, and exposure at the most basic level. Outdoor portrait photography, or taking photos of a pretty girl, require a few conditions, to produce good results:
1. Softer light – reflected light, orsunlight diffused through the clouds, rather than direct sunlight.
2. Scenery – in the form of uncluttered background.
3. Flattering pose and facial expression.
In this article, let’s focus on how to posea model, for outdoor photos in natural light. We often take such photos during outdoor activities, such as going for a walk.
I will offer a few tips on posing a model.Disclaimer: I am not a professional photographer – I am engineering-trained,doing photography for fun. Special thanks to my model Qian, for agreeing to pose for this article!
Tip 1.Prepare a posing guide, if your model is new to posing for photos. Search online for poses you like, convert them to sketches, and print them out or keep them in your mobile phone, to show to the model during the photo session.
Tip 2. The model does not have to look at the camera all the time. Looking away is less intimidating for the model. The photos may even turn out to be unique.
Tip 3. Talk to the model, instead of shooting quietly behind your camera. Praise her to make her feel confident of her look. And show her the photos every now and then, to reassure her she is doing alright, and to motivate her.
Tip 4. Make her lean against something for a start. One problem a new model always has is where to put the hands so that they look natural. Railings, walls, lamp posts can be found easily and put to good use. Try putting one leg in front of another, and bend the front leg slightly at the knee.
Tip 5. Try some free standing poses, sitting poses even those lying down. She may even enjoy the challenge of these poses. The photos will look very different.
Tip 6.Attempt some dramatic poses when she is ready. However, don’t expect such attempts to produce good results every time. If a pose does not work, move onand try something else. Who knows, the next pose may produce a stunner?
Tip 7. (Thislast tip is not about posing a model.) To become a better photographer, show people only your best photos. Isn’t that obvious? : )
Next time you take photos of that someone special, hopefully they will not be pictures of thumbs-up or peace sign. Share with me your special tips too, so that we can learn from each other. Cheers!
